Health care information careers are expanding as doctors, clinics and health care facilities of all types are moving to eliminate traditional paper record systems in favor of electronic health records (EHR’s). In fact, a new Federal law requires that all health records in the U.S. must be digitized by 2014. Once patient health records have been put in digital form, each organization must continually update and maintain these records, all while maintaining patient privacy.
Health information technicians are essential to meeting these new standards for health care records management.The Health Information Technology Program will prepare students for the modern health care office environment. It’s a world where maintaining patient records is a high priority. Students will be prepared to help assemble patients’ health information including medical history, exam results, tests, treatments and provider services. Technicians will organize and manage health information data by learning to ensure its quality, accuracy and security. Communications with physicians and other health care professionals is also part of the technician’s job and students will participate in an externship to get field experience prior to graduation.
